Background
Raised on the frontier colony of Pentares IV, Jake was encouraged by its dry desserts towards botany as a hobby and developed his fitness. His taste for excitement and adventure led him to Starfleet and the security branch in particular, where he quickly gained the attention of the instructors beating several of them at anbo-jytsu. Excelling at most physical skills, he was posted to the ground combat school on Takris II for advanced training and leadership 

His cadet cruise was aboard the U.S.S. Rutledge as assistant ground operations officer, where his bold action saved Ensign  Jemima Stone, a science officer, from being killed by a  vicious plant.  A brief affair with Jemima followed when Jake tried his hand at drama.

He was assigned to the U.S.S. Cambridge for his first  tour of duty, lasting six years. It is at this time he was brought to the attention of  Admiral Kennelly, who requested he serve on his staff during the Cardassian War as assistant fleet tactical operations officer. After the signing of the peace treaty with the Cardassians, Admiral  Kennelly promoted Jake and granted his request for a front line assignment, this time as tactical officer aboard the  U.S.S. Lexington, a Nebula- class cruiser

Personality & Appearance
Jake is a tall well tanned human, with classic Latin appearance.  He carries himself with an air of cool confidence; this sometimes distances people he would rather get to know better.  His sometimes dogged persistence of an objective, however, has led to senior officers treating him with respect. He does have difficulty forming anything other than professional friendships, as his previous attempts have met in failure.  Jake takes great pride in being in Starfleet and on the Lexington in particular, and can quote easily the ship's proud history and lineage. He feels sure that the treaty with the Cardassians is only a temporary truce at best, and is vigilant against possible infiltration by the Obsidian Order.
