Distinguishing Marks
Her left leg has a rather ugly scar just below the knee from a compound fracture that occurred during a mission. She kept the scar as a reminder to never get emotionally involved in a mission where your life and others are at stake.

Physical Description
When on duty, Helena's uniform is rarely out of place, but her demeanor is not as straight. She remains fairly relaxed and friendly even in the face of imminent danger. Helena tends to be rather informal, kidding around with her fellow officers attempting to lighten the mood and almost always wearing a smile on duty. Slightly irreverent, she still completes her duties efficiently. Her occasional flippant response and her willingness to gamble the outcome using unorthodox methods have not always endeared her to her fellow officers. She remains always at her station unless ordered elsewhere.

When on personal time, Helena's demeanor is pretty much the same off-duty except more so. She partakes in a number of games of chance, preferably poker. Helena dresses for the occasion but most often is found wearing something made of silk, often a jade green in color. Her one concession regardless of fashion remains that her shoes must always be comfortable and she must be able to run in them. It is a rare sight to see her in shoes that some consider truly high fashion.

Physical Problems
Due to nerve damage done when her leg was broken, the muscles in that leg tend to spasm after any prolonged running-- which is why Helena retired from competitive endurance running shortly after the injury. If actually running for over an hour, the leg muscles will begin to spasm. This can be treated with a proper muscle relaxant but tends to put Helena in a very foul mood.

Interests and Hobbies
Current events on the frontier near the Klingon border, gambling, reading (usually novels of high adventure and piracy), singing

Skills/Training/Professional Skills
Trained originally in security and tactical, Helena oddly always seemed to be involved in areas outside her specialty to the point where she quickly found herself gravitating toward or being promoted into command positions. A competent security and tactical officer, she never had the time to become a true expert in her field as her actions caused her to be recruited by Starfleet Intelligence and shortly thereafter recognized for her abilities as a leader...prompted to take Command School and change branches when she returned to regular duty.

Financial Status
Equivalent status to a core world civilian but also considered relatively wealthy by frontier standards due to the inheritance that her grandfather Harry Mudd left her. Originally starting with 4100 bars of gold-pressed latinum, she has in the last twelve years spent one hundred bars of the fortune to further certain goals and assignments.

Group Affiliations
Having been trained and involved in several Starfleet Intelligence operations, Helena has some contacts within the organization. SFI would dearly love to bring her officially back within the fold as a full time agent, but Helena has denied all such requests for a full transfer--agreeing only to be recalled for certain missions. It is doubtful that SFI will stop trying to recruit her full time, but it has also led to her gaining access to the occasional piece of data that has been helpful in return.

Personality
Helena is quite friendly and relaxed, and quite mischievous when she is feeling playful. She is often described as an imp, but her humor at times can become grating as she is often irreverent and flippant. She loves to gamble and has been known to be quite daring and willing to act often in an unorthodox manner before fully evaluating the situation--though in her mind she has already evaluated and come to her own conclusions. Regardless, she gets results and she knows it, but she does not brag about it. Underneath this devil-may-care attitude, though, is a person who finds it very hard to trust others and lets few in. While she can be friendly and many call her friend, Helena often views them as acquaintances. She usually works well and plays easily with others, but few realize that she only lets them in so far and then no farther.

Ambitions and Goals
Helena originally wanted to become a security officer, apprehending those that truly used their abilities to harm others--the villains that took advantage of those on the frontier. But her career had other things in mind, and she was soon diverted from them. Instead, she realized that the entire Federation needed such protection. She acquiesced to work in Intelligence but found that while she was good at it, she tended to get restless. During the off time between missions she tended to get a little too wild for her comfort, so she transferred back to regular duty and has been climbing toward a command position ever since. Oddly enough, she would be satisfied returning for a brief time to the frontier as the CO of a patrol corvette, but she craves the atmosphere of the frontier and has only recently realized that she would prefer an assignment most of all on a planet near the frontier.

Psychological Quirks and Problems
Helena is afraid of becoming close to anyone, and if she feels she is getting close she tends to back off in very subtle ways while still maintaining her friendliness. This is an ability she picked up from her grandfather and further enhanced during her cadet cruise--the ability to remain flexible with those around her and their ideals. However, actually letting them become close personal friends or a lover is something she balks at and finds quite difficult even when she wants to. Helena craves adventure and excitement. Whether this is in part due to the stories she grew up on, the inherent loneliness from the walls she has created, or just something that is natural to her is unknown. It is likely a bit of each as she often tends to push herself to find that edge and becomes restless if she does not. Counselor Troi did manage to curb this restlessness while Helena served on the Enterprise, but only time will tell if it returns in her new assignment.

Family
Timothy Mudd; Father, 69 years old, free trader. Married Victoria Dellings and had one child, Helena. Timothy was the only one of Harry Mudd's three children to become fully reconciled with their father, given Harry's itinerant wanderings and abandonment of the various families he had during his career. Timothy's other half-brother and sister never truly forgave Harry and in part rejected Timothy because he reconciled. Timothy and Victoria disappeared in 2350 and were declared missing and presumed dead when no trace of their ship, the SS Fool's Fortune, was found.

Michael Mudd; Uncle, 67 years old, merchant prince operating near Tzenkethi border, believed to be involved in some illegal activities but spent a fortune during the war making certain refugees got evacuated to safety. One of three children of Harry Mudd. Has never met Helena. Widowed. Father of four: Lance, Jamie, Hans, and Mischa. Hans and Lance are missing and presumed dead since a colony they were delivering to was overrun. Mischa served a minor sentence for stealing and has since disappeared somewhere along the frontier. Jamie is considering applying to a private security or mercenary company. Her father is trying to convince her to join Starfleet but she holds them in contempt, blaming them for the loss of her siblings.

Sasha Mudd; Aunt, 57 years old, free trader officially but tends to run a powerful information web and is rumored to be the true leader of the Black Hart's Mercenary Band. She is quite the consumer of men, and it is believed that one of her officers aboard her tramp freighter is actually her daughter.

Friends/Lovers
Helena has no close friends or lovers, having lost the majority during the war. The closest she has to a friend at the close of Dominion War is Commander Will Riker.

Enemies/Rivals
Commander Janice Tiffani Kirk is a rival who is based on equal parts competitiveness and family history. While friendly toward one another, their competition has remained legendary since their academy days, as each tries to outdo the other. When Commander Kirk became the XO of the Challenger, it just barely topped out over Helena serving on the Enterprise. When the Challenger disappeared under mysterious circumstances in late 2374, Helena only then realized how close and important Janice was to her..but by then it was too late.

Pets
Tigger, a four-year-old Targ.

Special Powers
Helena Mudd has a rather naturally high psionic ability that has yet to be discovered or tapped consciously through discovery or training. One of Helena's former COs suspected such, but he died before he could investigate further just prior to the onset of the Dominion War. If Helena ever receives training and manages to overcome her own personal blocks, her raw power could be devastating. There have been certain subconscious triggerings but nothing that has been so overt to undeniably assert that Helena is psionically talented.

Weaknesses
Helena has a soft spot for orphans and will go out of her way to try to help one.

Personal History
July 4, 2347 - Helena is born to Timothy and Victoria Mudd on the SS Fool's Fortune.

Sept 28, 2350 - Helena is left with her 123-year-old grandfather Harcourt Fenton Mudd on Sherman's Planet while her parents deliver needed medical supplies to a nearby colony world.

Dec 10, 2350 - The Fool's Fortune never reaches Jane's Addiction. The search is called off a week later and the ship is declared missing, presumed destroyed. Being an only child, Helena remains in the custody of her grandfather instead of being shipped off to one of her other relatives. She would spend over a decade being raised on tales of Harry's adventures and follies when foiled by Starfleet and other agencies. He would also teach her many of the tricks that had helped Harry accomplish the events behind his stories. It was an education that often skirted the law. Ironically enough, this exposure and training gave her insights into how easy it would be to abuse such knowledge, and Helena developed an interest in security.

June 1, 2363 - Harcourt Mudd dies at the age of 136. Helena buries him. In his will, he leaves her his entire fortune of 4,000 bars of gold-pressed latinum. Having a small fortune that could allow her to do almost anything leaves her slightly overwhelmed. It would not be until her 16th birthday that she would finally decide to apply to Starfleet Academy.

Jan 1, 2364 - Having been accepted almost two months before, Helena begins classes on Earth. She almost immediately adopts it as her new home and places her wealth in the most secure storage facility she can find. Classes for the most part go quickly and easily, but Helena gains a reputation for being adventurous and gambling on instinct. hher unorthodox methods cause caused instructors to either love her or hate her.

Feb 8, 2364 - Helena Mudd meets Janice Kirk, a fourth-year cadet. Due to Janice's great grandfather being Jim Kirk's nephew, this sets off an immediate yet friendly rivalry that lasts to this day. In the early days, though, it became quite heated at points, and some of their competitions reached near legendary status. It also got them called into Commandant Brand's office a number of times.

Dec 26, 2366 - News of the Borg Invasion and the rumor of Picard's assimilation disrupt Helena's vacation after completing her third year. Having chosen to train in security and tactics, she is recalled and assigned to help keep certain areas cordoned off during the emergency. She would later learn that all cadets were utilized in the emergency.

Jan 2, 2367 - News of Wolf 359 and the Battle for Earth is released across Earth. All cadets are utilized in rescue and repair efforts. These trying and horrible times cause Helena to realize that she would be more useful with EVA training and later in the year she would take advanced training in EVA maneuvers.

Dec 31, 2367 - With the disruption caused by the Borg invasion the previous year, the class of 2367 graduates nearly two weeks later than normal. Helena graduates with High Honors.

Jan 1, 2368 - Without any leave whatsoever, Helena is assigned to the USS Odyssey for her cadet cruise. Its assignment is to travel the core worlds and use diplomacy to smooth over the anxiety caused by the Borg invasion and the ongoing Klingon Civil War. Due to her leadership and organizational skills, Helena would in a few short months be made section leader for all cadets assigned to the Odyssey.

Dec 20, 2368 - Helena completes her cadet cruise. The Galaxy-class Odyssey's trip through the core worlds has calmed the anxiety and taught the cadets many valuable lessons--most of all the need to be flexible. Helena is quite surprised and pleased when Captain Keogh approves a promotion recommended by his XO to the rank of Lieutenant, junior grade.

Jan 1, 2369 - Helena is assigned to the Galaxy-class starship USS Intrepid. She unfortunately just misses Lieutenant Kirk, who has just been transferred from the Intrepid to the USS Bismarck.

Sept 26, 2369 - Due to her actions during the Lumatra Colonies Unrest, Helena Mudd is promoted to full Lieutenant.

Dec 8, 2370 - During an officer exchange with a Klingon Defense Force cruiser Ravager, it is learned that the Klingons were renegades when they tried to disrupt the treaty by sabotaging the Intrepid and laying waste to Sherman's Planet. Thanks to Lieutenant Mudd's quick thinking, the sabotage of the Intrepid is prevented, but her superior--Commander Bessa'ar--is killed on the Ravager in the ship's destruction. Three days later, Commander Escott authorizes Helena's attempt to obtain her branch certification.

Jan 23, 2371 - Helena successfully passes her certification. She is awarded the Space Exploration Medallion.

Feb 12, 2371 - Lieutenant Mudd takes Advanced Tactical Starship Training for the next twelve weeks.

Nov 11, 2371 - The Kobayashi Affair. The USS Intrepid and Bismarck are destroyed preventing the Borg from obtaining a Slaver device in one of the most destructive battles ever waged against the Borg.

Dec 18, 2371 - Lieutenant Helena Mudd is awarded the Christopher Pike Medal of Honor after the inquiry board reviews the events of the Kobayashi Affair. All Starfleet officers involved are likewise honored. Helena meets Admiral Saavik and is asked if she would like to obtain her bridge certification. She agrees and begins courses the next day on Earth.

Jan 8, 2372 - Helena Mudd passes her certification and receives a promotion to Lieutenant Commander. Surprisingly, instead of being reassigned to starship duty, she is sent to Starfleet Intelligence's Operations School.

Dec 10, 2372 - Graduating Starfleet Intelligence Operations School, Helena receives a special assignment. Her orders attach her directly to Admiral Saavik's staff but in reality has her far afield performing various field operations--all highly classified.

Sept 20, 2373 - Admiral Saavik retires as C-in-C of Starfleet and begins her campaign to run for President of the United Federation of Planets. Lieutenant Commander Mudd continues working for Saavik.

Oct 18, 2373 - Having completed various Intelligence Missions, Helena Mudd is transferred to a new posting on the USS Ambassador as the ship's chief of security and tactical department.

Jan 8, 2374 - Former Admiral Saavik assumes the Presidency of the UFP, after campaigning is cut short due to the war.

Nov 10, 2374 - While investigating an anomaly, the USS Ambassador is attacked by what appears to be a Constellation-class cruiser. The ferocity of the attack causes a catastrophic warp core breach. Due to the quick thinking of Lieutenant Commander Mudd, most of the bridge crew are saved from the Ambassador's fiery destruction. It is later learned that the vessel was the USS Newton, a vessel missing since the last Borg attempt to assimilate Earth. The Newton had been partially assimilated by the Borg...and it is still out there.

Dec 30, 2373 - Captain Picard, having heard about Helena Mudd, requests that she be assigned as the Enterprise's Chief Tactical and Security officer. Lieutenant Commander Mudd agrees without hesitation.

June 1, 2375 - While the Enterprise is sent on a number of diplomatic missions--including the welcoming of the one new member to the UFP as a protectorate--Mudd takes a runabout back to Earth to pick up several recent graduates from the Academy who are assigned to the USS Enterprise for their first tour.

June 20, 2375 - Events from Insurrection take place while Lieutenant Commander Mudd is returning from Earth. She diverts to rendezvous with the Enterprise, ten days later.

June 30, 2375 - Events from the scenario "Missing Legends" takes place. See module for more details.

Dec 16, 2375 - With the war over, Helena Mudd (at Captain Picard and Commander Riker's insistence) travels back to Earth to attend Command School, starting classes on the 19th.

March 27, 2376 - Helena Mudd completes Command School and receives a promotion to full Commander. She takes a few weeks of leave that she had coming while she awaits reassignment.

Author's Notes
This character originally began in my old FASA-game aboard the USS Intrepid. When her player moved away, we switched to an email Intelligence game. The character was active for three full game years and was converted in part using Allen Shock's Conversion rules. However, seeing how she turned out, her abilities have been downgraded some to better fit within the system. If you use her as a reoccurring NPC, I would recommend a new command position, a small starship or starbase command where she would definitely listen to her senior staff (PCs) for suggestions. If used as a guest star, her best use would probably be as a field operations instructor to prepare the PCs for an intelligence mission. There are two key events in her life: the Lumatra Colonies Unrest and the Kobayashi Affair. Describing these events would have added several pages, so if you would like more information on these events, her contacts, or anything else about Commander Helena Mudd please e-mail me at shaman@nucleus.com
