Description and Notes
The Galaxy-class refit is a product of Starfleet's attempt to create a ship capable of performing both research missions as well as act as a fleet defender. During the ship's trials it became quite clear that all expectations would be exceeded by a considerable margin.

The Galaxy-class hull was chosen for this size and ease of modification, as they already possessed one of the strongest primary structural support members of any ship class in the fleet. The first change that was made was the addition of a third nacelle. This was followed by an increase in the structural integrity field to accommodate the increased hull stresses. Then a planetary defense phaser cannon was added to the ventral side of the primary hull. This was later found to be an off hand remark that the Vulcan chief engineer took as a design direction. Also 2 disruptor cannons were placed on the dorsal of the primary hull on either side of the main bridge. The sensor and shield systems were felt to be too difficult to upgrade within the design budget for the project. The first ship to be upgraded in this way was the U.S.S. Constitution, which also served as the test bed for the upgrade; this was necessary due to extensive damage received by the ship during the second Borg incursion into Federation space.
