Description and Notes
Fleet data: The Hermes-class is the newest set of eyes and ears for Starfleet.  The lighter of two ships built on the same basic spaceframe (the other being the Saladin-class destroyers), its primary responsibility is to do preliminary checks on a new sector as a prelude to charting by a Cruiser.  It mounts a single warp nacelle, mounted ventrally from the back of the saucer.

Noteworthy vessels / service records / encounters: U.S.S. Hermes, prototype; U.S.S. Camelopardus, first spotted Gorn action near Cestus III (2267); U.S.S. Phoenix, first Starfleet vessel to enter First Federation space (2269); U.S.S. Cygnus, lost during first extended sensor sweep of Collapsar 49 in Arteline Sector (2273).
