Description and Notes
Fleet data: Starfleet's new Pathfinder-class
vessels represent the latest attempt by Starfleet to return to exploration and
discovery missions, based on the technology used to design both the Sovereign-
and Defiant-classes, and the original Defiant pathfinder chassis.
The resultant vessel allows the Pathfinder-class to more than adequately
fulfill its three-tiered mission objective: to explore uncharted space, to
established first contact scenarios, and to allow the ship to survive in hostile
situations.
Designed to complete 5- year exploration missions with limited external support, it is the latest vessel to enter active service as a result of Starfleet Exploration Directive 1023.3. Its smaller size has allowed for more rapid production; its smaller crew complement has made it easier for Starfleet to rebuild its severely weakened fleet and bring the number of active ships back up from the losses of the Dominion War.
Noteworthy vessels / service records / encounters: U.S.S. Pathfinder, prototype; U.S.S. Vigilance, assigned to rendezvous with the U.S.S. Voyager; U.S.S. Hawkins, exploration of the Gamma Quadrant.
