Description and Notes
Fleet data: Reflecting the nature of an organization such as the Starfleet Marines, their equipment and ships are not comparable to Starfleet's standard. Not designed for exploration but solely for battle, the Vanguard-class APC is essentially a shuttle designed to transport one platoon of Starfleet Marines as well as to give limited air/space support. To ensure the safety of the marines, the shields have been upgraded and the hull has been enhanced with ablative armor. The APC is armed with two Type V phaser banks with a fixed forward firing arc and a torpedo launcher with a supply of 6 Photon Micro-Torpedoes to give support fire for ground operations. A universal boarding hatch makes it possible to board any kind of ship without having to dock with a hatch or beaming over .

However, these enhancements leave the APC without transporters (except for one-time emergency beamout tranporters) and severely reduced main sensor array range. Also, power management is tricky and has to be carefully calculated.

Author's Notes
Ablative armor provides an additional 50% structural points of protection over other vessels. However, this armor, once damaged, can only be repaired/replaced at a Starfleet facility or shipyard.
This is taken from Don Mappins Defiant-class design.
