Description and Notes
Fleet data: Built in the 2320's, the Centaur was a forerunner of the Saber-class.
Intended to support the Ambassador, Excelsior and Miranda-classes,
the Centaur act in the roles of scouts and general support of fleet operations.
They were designed to be small and agile, and as a result the Centaur have
limited weaponry and a relatively poor standard of accommodation. This has prevented them
from being used for long duration missions. This problem recurred with the Saber-class.
The shape of the Centaur clearly shows the ship to be a contemporary of the Excelsior
and Ambassador. The nacelles are large for a ship of this size; a feature they
share with the Excelsior-class. They are equipped with 7 individual phaser banks
rather than phaser arrays. Starfleet has attempted to refit the Centaur-class
with phaser arrays several times during their lifespan, but have consistently been refused
the necessary resources. The Centaur are equipped with two torpedo tubes; one
forward and one aft, and a limited stock of reloads.
Despite these shortcomings, the Centaur have proved popular with their crews.
However, these ships are now nearing the end of their service lives and are due to be
retired.
Noteworthy vessels / service records / encounters: U.S.S. Centaur, prototype; and thirty-nine other vessels built from 2325-2342. Twenty-eight remain in service.
